Community Unitarian Church is located in White Plains, a city of approximately 57,000 people, located 10 miles north of New York City’s northernmost borough, the Bronx. While it is considered a part of the New York City Metropolitan Area, White Plains is also an important destination on its own. White Plains serves as the Westchester County Government Seat, with many county and other corporate and business offices located here. It is also a regional shopping mecca, with two major shopping malls and numerous smaller shopping complexes in and around its center, and along its perimeter. Its thriving revitalized downtown area contains an abundance of retail stores, restaurants, hotels, theatres, and residences of many types. Housing in White Plains includes single family homes, multi-family residences, condominiums, co-ops, and rental apartments.

White Plains’ location in the central part of Westchester County allows easy travel by many modes. Four Interstate highways and several parkways traverse the area. Interstate 287, which passes through White Plains, extends west across the Hudson River; to the east, it connects with Interstate 95 which provides access to Connecticut and all of New England. Several major roadways take travelers into New York City, and connect through to Long Island and New Jersey.

The Metro North railroad carries both daily commuters and weekend culture seekers into New York‘s Grand Central Terminal in as little as 35 minutes. Amtrak service is available at the nearby New Rochelle station, and connects with Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC and more. The Westchester County Airport – the third busiest in the state – is situated 5 miles north of White Plains. Three additional airports are within an hour’s drive from White Plains: LaGuardia, JFK International, and Newark Liberty International.

Many types of hospitals and health care facilities are located in and near the city, including several with national rankings. The City of White Plains has a well-regarded public school system, and there are numerous private schools, colleges and universities in and near White Plains. (Residents of CUC’s parsonage would be eligible to attend the White Plains Public Schools).
